Biokinetics Program

Being a qualified biokineticist, our students obtaining a BS from our program at CCSJ will have the opportunity to become active in a number of industries. From establishing their own practices, to finding work at government institutions, they can also pursue careers at sport institutions. Our students will work on individual scientific assessments as well as evaluate and measure various aspects of the human body – from heart rates and flexibility, to blood pressure, muscle strength and fitness.

Dr. Sandra Chimon-Rogers obtained her Ph.D. in Bio-Analytical Chemistry from the University of Illinois. She has brought her Alzheimer’s disease research to Calumet College of St. Joseph’s and is utilizing various high tech bio-analytical techniques and orthomolecular compounds to find a preventative. Her experience and passion includes encouraging students to present their research findings at various conferences from around the nation to around the world (from Brazil to France). During her last two years at DePaul she had 31 research students who presented over 120 posters and won various awards for their presentations and currently has 23 papers in progress and completion for publication. She has also published 1 laboratory manual and is currently working on 2 more (to be release in fall of 2016). Dr. Rogers would like to encourage our CCSJ students to part take in such research events to help motivate hands on research, confidence and understanding on what they do in the classroom does relate to real life. Over the past 2 years, Dr. Rogers has had over 30 students present posters at conferences in the Midwest and has had 4 of her students attend neuroscience presentation at the University of California. Also, one of her students was accepted into the International Human Cadaver Prosection Program at IUN.

Dr. Rogers teaches General and Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Forensic Biology, Instrumental Chemistry, Research Methods and Nutrition. She previously taught as a Bio-Analytical Chemistry at DePaul University where she also was the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Dr. Chimon –Rogers has also taught at Prairie State College, National-Louis University and Elmhurst College. Dr. Rogers was also been nominated for the “Excellence in Teaching” at DePaul along with the various other research recognitions.

Dr. Ahmed Lakhani is an assistant professor of science at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana. He received his Ph.D. in the area of Bio-Physics from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. He is currently teaching the general science courses, physics, and anatomy and physiology with a few others here and there. Dr. Lakhani is also involved with our summer bridge program at CCSJ.

Dr. Fiona Poe completed her Ph.D in biochemistry from the University of Illinois in 2014. During her graduate studies, she earned the Robert L. Switzer teaching award and was an American Society for Microbiology Science Teaching Fellow. Her research interests include sugar metabolism in plant pathogens and agar degradation in marine bacteria. Dr. Poe teaches general biology, microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology. She is also highly active with the Whiting Science Olympiads along with various other high school outreach programs.

Biokinetics is described as the science of movement as well as the application of exercise in performance or treatment that is rehabilitative in nature. Therefore the question which arises is, what is a biokineticist and what do they do? A biokineticist is an exercise specialist who increases a person’s physical condition and the quality of life by means of physical assessment and the prescription of health exercise habits. It is a health care profession that concerns itself with a number of factors within the medical sphere. This includes the management of health, orthopedics, functional movement, medicine and treatment in the form of physical activity, therapeutic recreation and the maintenance as well as improvement of one’s physical abilities and performance levels.

Career Options with this major include but are not limited to:

  • Work within the fields of corporate wellness
  • Work within the field of fitness training
  • Work within the field of clinical exercise physiology (i.e. cardiac rehabilitation)
  • Work within the research field
  • Work within the field of studying human performance
  • Prepare for application to graduate school in athletic training.
  • Work as a physical education instructor.
  • Work as a conditioning coach.
  • Work as an exercise nutritionist or a representative for the nutrition industry.
  • Work as an owner of their own private practice or find occupation in fields that include the police service, professional sport, fire services and even military hospitals.
