Attention Blackboard Instructors: You are now able to copy your own courses

The copy course feature allows you to take an already existing course and copy components of the existing course into the new course. This is a great feature for instructors who teach the same course(s) from semester to semester.

Distance Learning

Simply stated distance education is instruction that occurs when the instructor and student are separated by distance or time, or both. Distance learning is a process that extends learning or the delivery of instruction to locations away from the physical location of the instructor and beyond the time constraints of the class period. Distance learning provides a more flexible approach to learning. Instruction is delivered using video, audio, computer, multimedia communications, or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods.

Many courses at Calumet College of St. Joseph are supplemented with online instruction through Blackboard. Other courses are delivered solely online.

Minimum Computer Requirements for Distance Learning Participation

  • Pentium II processor or higher is recommended
  • Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6.0 or with Firefox 1.5
  • Windows 2000 with Internet Explorer 6.0 or with Firefox 1.5
  • Macintosh 10.2 / 10.3 / 10.4 with default version of Safari or with Firefox 1.5

Other Requirements/Settings

  • Macromedia Flash Player 8
  • The security settings for the browser should be set to "low"
  • The popup blocker settings for the browser must always be set to turn off popup blocker
  • Optimal screen resolution to view the course is 1152 by 864 pixels
  • It is recommended that you use a 256 kbps or faster broadband Internet connection
  • Software Requirements: Download plug-INS, players and viewers. Be sure you have the right technology at your fingertips. This includes a Web browser and appropriate plug-ins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ever lost a course syllabus? Misplaced the directions for the class project? Left your folder at home when you happen to be working on your homework at the library or in the computer lab? Imagine being able to access assignment information, syllabi, instructor hand-outs and other class materials easily from any computer with Internet access. Sounds great? Well, welcome to Blackboard!
Blackboard is an electronic learning platform that our instructors use to supplement face-to-face instruction or to deliver online instruction. Blackboard can best be thought of as a course notebook into which faculty members place their course materials. Any type of files faculty choose to include in the "online course notebook" can be posted to Blackboard course web sites. Students have access to the course materials as long as they have access to the Internet and a helper application that will allow them to view the materials placed online. Examples include: Microsoft Word, Excel or Power Point files, Adobe Acrobat documents, Quick Time movies, or Real Audio/Video files.
Some of the ways students may use Blackboard in their courss include:
  • View the syllabus
  • Review the instructor's lecture presentation
  • Communicate with instructors and fellow students using e-mail
  • Share materials and ideas with other course participants via the Discussion Board or in chat rooms
  • Submit and pick up assignments
  • Check grades
  • Take exams
  • Link directly to helpful web sites that allow students to share experiences and get information in the global community.
Each instructor decides whether or not to use Blackboard for a course and how it will be used, so you will find your use of Blackboard will vary from class to class.
Students access Blackboard via a web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) on any platform (PC, Mac) with Internet access. Point your browser to and click User Login. On the Entry Page enter Username and Password. Your username is the first initial of your first name, your full last name and the last five digits of your CCSJ student ID number. For example, Harry Potter's, CCSJ student ID number: 000050629, user name would be hpotter50629. Harry's password would be his full 9-digit CCSJ student ID number, password: 000050629 or password: 100050629.
If your last name is hyphenated, type it in without the hyphen. Example: Lynn Walker-Jones would be lwalkerjones00000. If you have a double last name without a hyphen then your username will be both names run together. Example: Ann Van Dyke would be avandyke00000.

You may change your password after you log on. To change your password, on the My Institution Page, under Tools, click on Personal Information and click the link "Change Password".
If you are using an ISP, such as AOL, you will need to start another browser such as Internet Explorer to access Blackboard. In the past, the AOL browser has tried to insert the AOL user ID and password into Blackboard.
If you are using AOL, establish an Internet connection. Then start another browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape and access
To open a document, move your mouse pointer over the name of the document (the mouse pointer will change to an arrow since it is a hyperlink). Left-click the "Open" button to view the document.
The Save as Draft function is available if you need to return to your assignment at a later time. This function saves your comments and files on the page. When you finish your assignment, you must click Submit. If you do not, your instructor will not receive your completed assignment.
You must have Java and cookies enabled on your browser to use Blackboard.
To check the settings in Internet Explorer: Start Internet Explorer, select Tools and choose Internet Options. Click the Security tab. Medium level allows you to access Blackboard. If necessary, click on Default level to reset security to Medium.
To check the settings in Netscape: Start Netscape, select Edit and choose Preferences. Click on the Advanced category, and see that you have Java enabled and cookies accepted.
You can send email to your instructor or other students from within Blackboard. Click the Communications button on the left side of your screen. Click Send Email and then click on a link to send to all users, all instructors or one or more students. There is no capability to read email from within Blackboard. You can read your email by accessing your web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) and pointing your browser to Click OK and then type your CCSJ Username and password. Your login information in Email is different than your login in Blackboard.

Files created and saved in Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) are given different file extensions when they are saved. Office versions 2003 and older use the familiar .DOC and .XLS extensions for Word and Excel. Office 2007 documents use DOCX and XLSX. Another example would be PowerPoint files. Instead of using the PPT file extension, Office 2007 adds a PPTX extension. Office 2003 programs cannot recognize files created in Office 2007. Students can access Blackboard from any computer by going to the CCSJ Home Page and clicking on the Blackboard link under Current Students or going to Click the User Login button and on the next screen enter your user id and password to gain access to Blackboard. You can also access Blackboard at
Once you are logged in, you can enter any Blackboard course in which you are enrolled by clicking on the name of the course under the "My Courses" section on the right side of the screen.
In your course site, click on the Communication button. Click on the Collaboration button. You must have the Blackboard Java plug-in installed on your computer for the Virtual Classroom to work. If you have a Pop Up Blocker, hold down the CTRL button as you click on the Join button to access the Virtual Classroom. To install Java, go to
Your course site is a safe web environment. Only other students enrolled in the course and the course instructor(s) will have access to the course. Of course, if you fail to logout when you leave a public computer or forget to close out of the web-browser, you will certainly be leaving your classroom environment open to the public.
You will need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as AOL, Net Nitco, ATT, Comcast Cable, DSL etc. for this problem.
