With a Sports Management Concentration

The Sports Management concentration is designed to offer in-depth education and training for students aspiring to careers in various sectors of the sports industry. This concentration within the business management program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the unique management principles, practices, and challenges specific to sports organizations, events, and related areas.

Sports-related jobs are among the fastest growing career paths, with 25.8% projected growth (Census Bureau, Jan 2023).  Students studying sports-related fields are pursuing careers with:

The concentration in Sports Management prepares students for a diverse range of careers. You’ll study athletic program design and evaluation, as well as organizational leadership and facility operations. Courses also focus on the legal and ethical aspects of the sports business, plus the regulatory climate administrators must navigate when working with athletes.

A degree isn’t a necessity, but it will probably help you get hired. Most university level athletic directors carry a college level credential since they work in an administrative role.  Employees with a bachelor’s degree also have a 50% lower rate of unemployment, and on average they make an additional $630,000 to $900,000 over their lifetime.

Objectives and requirements

Upon completion of this program:
  • Students will be able to synthesize key functions of Sports Management including sports marketing, sales, facility management, event planning and sports law.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate skills in leadership, communication and problem solving skills within the context of sport management.
  • Students will be able to analyze and evaluate key theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios within the sports industry.
  • Students will be able to discuss and interpret ethical and legal frameworks specific to the sports industry.
  • Students will be able to evaluate and then apply various networking techniques vital to the sports industry.
